A claw — a single adamantium claw, bone-yellowed at the cuticle — slides out of his right hand and the others follow with a wet metallic snap, two of three actually deploying. This is Logan. He's older now. Beard streaked gray. Eyes sunk back. The claws used to come out clean. Now there's a delay. He kills two of the cartel kids and the third one runs and Logan limps back to the limo coughing blood into his sleeve. He's a chauffeur in 2029. He drives bachelor parties in a stretch he can barely keep alive. His healing factor is dying in him and his own adamantium skeleton is poisoning him. No new mutants have been born in twenty-five years. The X-Men are over.
He drives through the night to an abandoned industrial smelter across the border, where Caliban — albino, sun-allergic, the mutant tracker from X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) — is keeping a man hidden inside a fallen water tower. Logan crawls through a service hatch. Inside the cylinder is Charles Xavier, ninety years old now, in a wheelchair he can no longer drive. His mind has gone. He gets seizures — telepathic seizures — and when he does, every person within a kilometer goes brain-stunned and starts bleeding from the ears. One of those seizures already killed seven X-Men at the Westchester estate. Charles doesn't remember it. Logan keeps him sedated on black-market drugs Caliban buys. The professor and the chauffeur, hiding in a water tower in Mexico while Charles's mind fires off the worst psionic event in mutant history every few months. A Mexican woman in scrubs starts following Logan around El Paso. Her name is Gabriela. She wants to hire him to drive her and her little girl to North Dakota for fifty thousand dollars. He's saving every dollar he makes to buy a sunseeker boat called the Sunseeker — he's already named it — and take Charles out into the Gulf where the telepathic seizures can't hurt anyone. Charles has been having telepathic conversations with her for weeks. Logan is two minutes into yelling at Charles when Donald Pierce — a polite Southern cyborg with a chrome prosthetic forearm — drives up to the gate with a private security team called the Reavers in tactical kit. They stop at a Oklahoma City casino so Charles can have a bed for the night. A Reaver squad shows up in the casino lobby. Laura goes to work on them in the parking garage while Logan and Charles flee. The next afternoon, on an Iowa highway, they help a Black farming family — the Munsons — recover a stolen horse trailer from corporate ranchers who tried to muscle them off the road. The Munson patriarch invites the three travelers home for dinner. The dad, a former veteran with a daughter Laura's age, cuts the table for them and grills steaks. Charles, in a sundown moment of complete lucidity, says "this is what life looks like, Logan. A home. People who love each other. Safe beds." He cries a little. He thanks Logan for the day. Laura watches him sleep. She picks the keys to a stolen truck out of his coat. She drives. He wakes up in the passenger seat. They've covered three hundred miles while he was unconscious. He doesn't yell at her. He doesn't say much at all anymore. They drive into the woods of central North Dakota and reach the coordinate Laura's been hiding in her pocket for two weeks: a meadow, a tree line, a half-dozen tents, a campfire, and a dozen kids her age who light up when they see her. The Transigen mutants made it to Eden. Eden was real. They have supplies and a window of forty-eight hours to walk to the Canadian border, where the Mexican-nurse network has people waiting. Logan tells them to leave him in the woods. He's done. They go.
Laura refuses to go. She injects Logan with a single dose of a black-vialed adrenal serum she stole from the lab — a temporary cocktail of growth factors and stimulants that Transigen developed to push Logan's prime physiology past its current decay. It's only good for one fight. He doses. His healing factor flares back online. His hair, his eyes, his stride — for fifteen minutes, he's the Logan of 1979. They run into the forest after the kids. Laura, crying, calls him "daddy" for the first time in the film. He looks at her with the last of his face. "Don't be what they made you." She presses her forehead to his. He dies on the branch in the woods of North Dakota.
The kids bury him next to a small lake. Wooden cross, dug grave, no body bag. They each say something — a poem, a prayer, a thank you, a memory. Laura goes last. She recites the closing speech from Shane, the 1953 western Charles had her watch in a Vegas hotel room the week before. "A man has to be what he is, Joey. Can't break the mold. I tried it and it didn't work for me… Now you run on home to your mother, and tell her — tell her everything's all right. And there aren't any more guns in the valley." She turns to the cross. She lifts it out of the earth, rotates it forty-five degrees, and pushes it back down into the dirt — turning the cross into an X. The X-Men, the man, the family — finally laid to rest in the same gesture. She walks into Canada with the kids. Credits. No mid-credits scene. No post-credits scene.
