In Mumbai, Arun Verma (Anil Kapoor) — a struggling young violinist — runs an unofficial orphanage for street children. Arun's deceased father had been a brilliant scientist; before his death, he had been working on revolutionary cloaking technology that would allow its wearer to become invisible. Arun discovers his father's research notes and a prototype invisibility wristwatch hidden in his deceased mother's belongings. The watch, when activated by a specific gesture, renders its wearer completely invisible to human and mechanical observation.

Arun's friend journalist Seema Sahni (Sridevi) is introduced as the film's primary romantic foil. Seema is a feisty, English-speaking newspaper reporter from a wealthy family; she rents a room in Arun's orphanage building because she's investigating the area's crime networks. Arun and Seema initially clash — Seema's Anglicised mannerisms grate against Arun's traditional sensibilities — but their gradual friendship and eventual romance is the film's primary character-development arc.

Mumbai is being terrorisizd by Mogambo (Amrish Puri) — a megalomaniacal criminal mastermind whose primary base is a hidden island fortress called Mogambo's Cave. Mogambo plans to take over India through a combination of violence, terror, and corruption. His primary enforcement involves murdering local crime bosses and forcing their territories under his control. The film's social-issue subtext — depicting widespread political corruption and underground crime networks — is the franchise's primary thematic commitment.

Arun uses his invisibility wristwatch as a tool to fight back against Mogambo's organisization. He becomes known publicly as 'Mr. India' — a mysterious invisible vigilante who has been disrupting Mogambo's operations. Arun's invisibility-based vigilante work combines comedic situations (his clothes appear to float when he's invisible) with genuine combat sequences. The Mr. India identity gradually attracts both Mogambo's attention and the broader Mumbai public's curiosity.

Seema, working as a journalist, becomes increasingly suspicious of Arun's connection to the Mr. India vigilante. Her investigations gradually uncover the truth; she initially confronts Arun in anger but eventually accepts his secret. Seema's reveal of Mr. India's identity to her newspaper is the film's primary character-development pivot; her commitment to keeping the secret despite professional pressure provides substantial dramatic weight. The 'Hawa Hawai' musical sequence — featuring Sridevi in elaborate stage dance choreography — is the film's most-iconic musical moment.

Mogambo's terror campaign escalates as he plans a major bombing attack on Mumbai. Arun, in his Mr. India identity, leads a coordinated counterattack involving his orphanage children, Seema, and a small team of allies. The third-act battle takes place at Mogambo's island fortress; the resulting confrontation features extensive practical-effects combat. Mogambo is killed when his own bombing apparatus detonates during the confrontation; his organisization is dismantled, and Mumbai is freed from his control.

The film's epilogue shows Arun continuing his orphanage work, his relationship with Seema formalised, and his Mr. India identity now publicly acknowledged. The invisibility wristwatch is preserved as the franchise's signature legacy; Arun continues to use it occasionally for charitable purposes. The film's continued cultural resonance has prompted multiple Bollywood sequel attempts (including a 2009 announced sequel that has not produced a finished film).
